For this Assignment, visit a nonprofit social service agency in your area and interview a social worker there.

By Day 7 of this week, you identify your agency and the social worker you will collaborate with. Your Final Project, submitted in Week 6 of the course, should focus on the following.

During the interview:

Determine whether the social worker is licensed, and find out about what brought him or her to the field as well as his or her work history.

Inquire about the social worker’s job activities, professional roles, and target client group, as well as services provided by his or her organization.

Determine the social worker’s professional work preferences (e.g., group, individual).

Ask about professional development and the social worker’s strategies for self-care.

By Week 6, submit a 4- to 5-page written account of your findings that satisfies the guidelines detailed in the Project: Agency Visit and Paper Rubric.

Educational background:

BSW (bachelor of social work) which required a year internship with a set amount of hours every semester. Obtained May 2012

MSW (Master of Social Work) which also required a year internship. Obtained Dec 2014

I’m a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in LA and TX. What brought me to the field of social work is the help I’ve received going through my own mental health battles by being diagnosed with bipolar. Along with my passion of helping others in their time of need. As far as work history, previously I’ve worked in an outpatient mental health clinic as well as a correctional facility. Currently, I work as an emergency room social worker at a local hospital.

-Inquire about the social worker’s job activities, professional roles, and target client group, as well as services provided by his or her organization.
Since I work at the county hospital, the target group consist of low income families, children, and adults. I help patients and their families address and resolve the social, financial, and psychological problems related to their health condition. I identify options and advocates for services to meet the patients and family’s comprehensive needs with available resources to promote quality cost-effective outcomes. So pretty much discharge planning, utilization reviews, and completing psychosocial assessments. As far as professional roles, I’m obligated to complete continuing education hours (20 for LA and 30 for TX) every year by attending seminars and conferences. Since I’m trying to obtain my LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) I must completed supervision hours weekly with a board approved supervisor for 2 years before I could sit for the licensure test. The LCSW is the highest credential and the highest paid in the field of social work.

Preference wise, I prefer individual. I despise group work. In the past I had to do groups. I’m so thankful I longer have to. LOL

As far as professional development, that goes back to me pursuing the LCSW credential. My self care routine consists of exercising, journaling, and debriefing with my team.
