You have no doubt heard the expression that a picture is worth a thousand words. Pictures really replace text very effectively. How would you use these pictures in an article you were writing to describe New York in the 1920’s?
Web Search: One of the most powerful use of photographs in this century came out very near the time of the glittering life you will see depicted in The Great Gatsby, and it shows a very different live. Search the web to find selections from the book Erskine Caldwell and Margaret Bourke-White composed called You Have Seen Their Faces. See how they used Bourke-White’s powerful photographs to paint a picture of America that most people barely knew existed at the time.
Assignment: Pick out any current topic of interest to you in the world, one for which you will be able to find powerful pictures on the web. Write an article in which you express and defend a position on the topic. Use the pictures you find there, and make sure that the pictures are the critical to the strength of your argument. The length of the project is hard to define, because it is a mix of pictures and words. In general, try to have about 400 words and at least four good pictures.
You do not have to worry about any copyrights with these pictures if you are using them for a school assignment and not trying to publish them yourself. That is called “fair use.”
