  • Renaissance Lifetime Achievement Award (30 points)

“The greatest gifts are often seen, in the course of nature, rained by celestial influences on human creatures; and sometimes, in supernatural fashion, beauty, grace, and talent are united beyond measure in one single person, in a manner that to whatever such an one turns his attention, his every action is so divine, that, surpassing all other men, it makes itself clearly known as a thing bestowed by God (as it is), and not acquired by human art.” –Giorgio Vasari

Your assignment is to persuade me, the President of the WVU Institute of Renaissance Life, to award your figure a lifetime achievement award for exceptional contributions to the Renaissance. In order for your figure to be considered for this prestigious award, you must write a letter to the Institute’s Award Committee.

Your letter must be word processed in 12 pt type and be at least two full pages in length, double-spaced, with no extra spacing between paragraphs. Include rationale for why your figure should win the award (thesis), brief background information about your artist, and a description of at least two works he/she created. Be sure to include the title and date of any work mentioned in your letter. Images of these works should be on a separate sheet of paper with a caption indicating the name of the artist, title, medium, and date. Explain how these works connect to Renaissance ideals (Humanism, Christianity, mathematics and geometry, the order of the universe, rationality, harmony, the importance of the ancient Republican Rome in Italy, the importance of depicting biblical stories in contemporary settings in the Netherlands, etc.)

For this assignment, you may consult Grove Art on the WVU Library’s website (https://login.www.libproxy.wvu.edu/login?qurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.oxfordartonline.com) but be sure to use your own words in the letter – don’t plagiarize!
