Precursors to Language, retrieved from Section 6.1 of your text.

The infants in the video are between newborn and 2 months of age.Infants use precursors to language to communicate.Between newborn and two months the precursor is crying. They use crying to communicate their needs such as hungry, wet, or tired. The cries are distinctive from each other, but sometimes they cry just to be crying. At two months the infant is making more sounds such as cooing and laughing, in addition to the crying. These are also precursors to language as they not considered language but instead just sounds.

The newborns are crying and you can tell the difference in the cries. In the video, one mother is holding her crying baby and comments that the cry is saying the baby is desperate for sleep (Piper, 2012).Another mother comments that her child is hungry, while several of the infants seem to just want to be held.At this stage of development infants are learning to communicate their needs using different sounds.“The earliest vocalizations—crying, cooing, and seemingly random acts of vocal noisemaking—can be thought of as warm-up sessions. At 2 to 3 months, the cooing and noisemaking appears to be random” (Piper, 2012).
