Respond to a classmate, and suggest some ways that they can get parents involved in this learning process by extending their activities to the child’s home environment. Discuss resources in the community that they may have overlooked. Discuss your role as a teacher or caregiver in a child’s life in terms of promoting optimal brain development through exposure to various experiences.
A teacher/caregivers role in a child’s life has such an important impact on them. You are there to guide, teach, help, and comfort them as they learn in your environment. We should also provide a healthy, loving, safe, emotionally balanced, secure and predictable environment for the children.
Give three examples of appropriate stimulation (activities) you can employ in the classroom or daycare center to promote learning.
- Matching game that includes colors, shapes, pictures and words
- Use flash cards to quiz the children, or see if they can name what’s on the card
- Have the children look at a board filled with items for a length of time and then cover the board and have the children write down all of the items they remember being on the board, this will help with memory and repetition
How can you include activities outside the classroom that will reinforce the learning?
The children can practice by using the activities we use in the classroom, or we can create different ones that incorporate learning in a fun way. Children like to have fun and play games while learning because it’s more fun when they think they’re playing a game instead of learning. We can name the different insects/birds we see outside, list the different colors we see from the leaves on the trees or the flowers on the ground, or name the types of trees outside.
How can you involve the parents and community resources (i.e., fieldtrips)?
We can get the parents more involved with the activities we do in the classroom. The teacher can also send home a daily homework report of what the child needs to complete that night and have it incorporate both the children and the parents. The children can also have their parents come in once every couple of months to get to know the children’s classmates.
Lastly, include information on a field trip you could take your class on in your local area that would extend the learning that you included in one of your sample activities.
In Arkansas we have an outdoor/nature fieldtrip for children. Arkansas Frontier is a living history farm open in October. Field trips include activities such as a dinosaur dig, large water wheel and gem stone mining, a pumpkin patch, a hayride, viewing live animals, and a trip through an enchanted forest of storybook characters. We could name all of the animals that we see while viewing the live animals. We could also name all of the different types of trees we see on our journey through the enchanted forest.
