Sex hormones are determined through biological influences (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). Early prenatal aspects provide information that is traceable to either male or female gender. Aspects that occur later in life have been directly correlated to hormones developed very early in life (2012).

Prenatal Hormones

There are many areas of research that focus on the development of personality characteristics. Androgens are one aspect that has been biologically studied (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). Androgens in large amounts have been linked to affecting behavior later in life. This has been found to be true with both males and females. The link resonates with becoming more aggressive. Androgen exposure has been identified to be a precursor to problems that may not otherwise exist (2012).

Hormones During and After Puberty

Hormones during and after puberty is an area that has been biologically researched (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). As males reach puberty more testosterone is produced which has been linked to aggressive tendencies. With females, estrogen is released resulting in a change in emotions, feelings, and behaviors. Cyclical oscillations are related to a change within the female personality. Although this is a small number the most predominant characteristics that people recognize are mood swings (2012).
