Comment on the suitability of your peer’s explanation(s) of his or her topic with regard to research design. Regardless of your peer’s choice of design, explain whether or not you believe a mixed methods design is called for to research this topic. If your peer has chosen a mixed methods design, explain whether or not you believe it is the most appropriate mixed methods design to address the research question. Identify other design option(s), besides the one you selected for your own post, you would recommend to study the proposed research question. Review the ethical issues your colleague raised in his or her post and suggest other issues which he or she should consider when conducting this research.

Topic: “Treatment & Management of Negative Symptoms of Schizophrenia”

My research question is What is the best way to help treat a manage the negative symptoms of schizophrenia? Applying the scientific method will allow me collect both types of data at roughly the same time; assessing information using matching hypothesis for both types of data; separately analyzing both types of data and comparing results through procedures such as a side-by-side comparison in a discussion, transforming the qualitative data set into quantitative scores, or jointly displaying both forms of data. For example, the investigator or interviewer can gather qualitative data to assess the personal experiences of the patients suffering with the negative symptoms of schizophrenia while also gathering data from survey instruments measuring their quality of life. The two types of data can provide validation for each other and also create a solid foundation for drawing conclusions about the intervention.

The dominant method would have to be the qualitative method: when measure the best ways to treat certain symptoms of an illness, such as schizophrenia, you will have to observe and pay attention to how the illness is impacted by both avenues: medication and therapy. This will better help you understand the impact of both on the patient. At this point data is being collected through interview and observation for further & future analyzing.

“qualitative studies about persons with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder require researchers to be flexible and ethically mindful throughout the study” (Graor & Knapik, 2013, pg. 70), ethical challenges may present during studies of persons with schizophrenia. It is the duty of the researchers to make informed decisions throughout the research process to increase understanding about persons with this mental illnesses, while also ensuring the rights, respect, and dignity of those being observed.

When looking at my research topic, I have been able to find multiple studies within the library that show quantitative research methods and very little using mixed methods. “researchers who use mixed methods employ a research design that uses both quantitative and qualitative data to answer a particular question or set of questions” (Hesse-Biber, 2010, pg. 3).

My research question is; How does the impact of Parental involvement in school and social events affect the prevalence of bullying.

This question can most likely be answered by researching similar studies that have asked the same type of questions. In research studies of this nature, quantitative would be the research method to use because it will give a better idea of the amount of children who are being bullied, how often their parents are involved in their school and social activities, and how this applies to the instances of bullying. Quantitative research is the ability to measure a quantity of something (Frost, 2011). The statistics that can be found about bullying would be beneficial to a research study of this topic.

Qualitative research methods might be appropriate for this research question if I were to be depending completely on the results from within a specific school, or school district. Observation would be a good way to gather data about local issues with bullying but it would lack a more statistical collection because of the lack of data from more demographical areas. For this reason, I believe that Quantitative research would be the most dominant way to answer this research question.

Ethical principals would be applied within the collection of the data and any possible observational studies by giving informed consent to the participants and observing the regulations with regards to minors and their involvement within a research study.
